A Potential Increase in Student Visa Fees
One of Labor’s post-election commitments includes a proposed increase in the cost of student visas. If implemented, the application charge for primary student visa holders could rise from $1,600 to $2,000, as early as July 2025.
While this change is not yet confirmed, it would represent a 25% increase, an important factor for international students planning their budgets. A Slight Reduction in the Permanent Migration Cap
Another proposal under Labor’s current plan is a modest reduction in the permanent migration intake, from 190,000 to 185,000 places for the 2024–25 program year.
Though a 5,000-place decrease may seem minimal, it can still impact competition for skilled migration visas, employer sponsorships, and regional programs, especially in high-demand sectors.
