Partner Visa Australia (Subclass 820 / 801)
The Partner Visa allows the spouse or de facto partner of an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen to live in Australia.
This visa is processed in two stages:
Stage 1: Subclass 820 (Temporary Visa)
- Allows you to live, work, and study in Australia
- Provides access to Medicare
- You must be in Australia at the time of application
Stage 2: Subclass 801 (Permanent Visa)
- Usually assessed 2 years after the 820 application
- Grants permanent residency
- Full work rights and long-term stability in Australia
Who Can Apply?
You may be eligible if you are:
- Married to an Australian citizen or permanent resident, or
- In a de facto relationship (generally at least 12 months, unless registered)
- In a genuine and ongoing relationship
- Living together or not permanently separated
